More about connections… they are at the heart of our lives after all!
Ever make one of those paper chains? I remember creating them as a child. We wrapped our Christmas tree in them for several years. Various colors of construction paper cut into strips. Strips glued into a circle. Another strip slipped through the circle. And another. Sometimes we would write or draw on the slips before they became circles and part of the chain. So simple. So symbolic.
Connected together the strips became something greater. Much like our lives. We each have unique gifts and qualities. But when we are connected in community we become more than we would be all alone. And in a chain every piece has an important part to play. This pandemic has perhaps helped us become more aware of how much we need each other. How important connection is. The internet can only do so much to keep us connected by providing a visual with an audial. But no tactile. No touch. No warmth. And sometimes not even much energy exchange!
So let’s celebrate connections! Here are two worth celebrating: our General Presbyter David Oyler and touching the lives of people around the world in tangible ways! Dr. Oyler is retiring after serving for 17 years as General Presbyter. He was granted the status of Honorably Retired during the online Presbytery meeting held this past Tuesday. He preached a “last word” kind of a sermon during the worship service offered on YouTube. Here’s the link if you’d like to view this touching celebration of his ministry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jwhft8FR2Bk&feature=youtu.be
And speaking of paper chains… here’s one worth joining! The Presbyterian Giving Catalog is creating a humongous one! The newly-elected co-moderators of the General Assembly, Elona Street-Stewart and Gregory Bentley, are seen here holding these “Links of Love”:
And we can add more links to the chain to celebrate our connection! If you’d like to join in, go to the online Giving Catalog, select a gift – like chickens or goats – and make a donation. Your Link of Love will be added to those already united in mission! And you’ll make a tangible difference in the lives of someone somewhere in the world! May God bless and strength all our connections with grace and unfailing love!
