Happy endings. We like them, prefer them, orchestrate them whenever possible. If anything must come to an end, let it be sweet. Movies, stories, vacations, novels, days… when we reach the end of them, let the ending be happy!
Perhaps this is our desire because “real life” is so often filled with endings that are not all that happy. Friendships fray, careers crash and burn, days disintegrate, good intentions give way to irrational impulses, faith falters, mortality mangles our presumptuous management of the future. Under the weight of undue unhappy endings, of course we long for escape in a feel-good movie, a heartstrings tugging story, or diversionary daytrip with a happy ending!
For better or worse, our good and gracious God doesn’t wrap us in a protective bubble at birth. Yet thankfully, our good and gracious God wraps us in a sturdy and stubborn love that won’t leave us alone! And our good and gracious God has granted us a sneak preview of the happiest ending of all endings! The good and gracious God who raised the battered body of Jesus out of the dark tomb of death promises us this:
God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more. There will be no mourning, crying, or pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Then the one seated on the throne said, “Look! I’m making all things new.” (Revelation 21:4-5)
For this we hope. Always. World without end. Amen!
